Disability Justice as Spiritual Text
An Emergent Program led by Jess Belasco
Third Thursday of each month:
October 19th, November 16th, December 21st
2:30-4:00pm ET / 1:30 – 3:00pm CT / 11:30am-1:00pm PT
At SVARA we give people the tools to shape Jewish tradition in expansive, radical, creative ways. We do this through Talmud study and through our emergent programs, which create affinity spaces to actively expand Jewish tradition.
One of SVARA’s emergent programs is the Disability Justice Torah Circle, which nurtures and amplifies the voices of Jews with disabilities and produces “Disability Torah” to impact the broader Jewish community.
Disability Justice as a Spiritual Text is a monthly workshop for people who identify as disabled or chronically ill to explore disability justice teachings as they intersect with our Jewish lives. We will gather to build a well of ‘svara’ around disability justice and spirituality by seeking the Torah — animating teachings — inherent in the work of a range of disability justice leaders, and bringing those teachings into conversation with our own experiences. Texts will be in English and from a variety of disabled writers and activists.
This Fall we are reading “Let This Radicalize You” by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba! While this text is not explicitly about disability justice, we are intentionally bringing it into conversation with disability justice & Torah.
Who is the Disability Justice as Spiritual Text group for?
– people who identify as disabled or chronically ill
– people who are exploring whether they might identify as disabled or chronically ill
