Los Angeles Fling

Have a Fling with SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva

LA friends, are you ready to get down with some Talmud realness? You heard that right, we’re bringing some hardcore, queer, and radically inclusive learning to Los Angeles this December, and you won’t wanna miss it! On December 15th we’ll be serving up a CRASH Talk and an immersive, mixed-level Bet Midrash, and the very next night it’ll be time for a *One-Night Stand,* a three-hour session of traditionally radical Talmud study. Each day you’ll have the opportunity to learn a complete Talmud text, start to finish, in the original Hebrew and Aramaic, to the point of deep mastery.

Join us to experience the beauty and excitement of Talmud study in the unique queer-normative space that we’ll be creating together. Whether or not you’ve learned with us before, we can assure you that there is nothing quite like the rigorous, joyous experience of diving into Talmud with SVARA.

And remember, regardless of your level of Talmud knowledge, SVARA’s bet midrash (learning community) is for you! All you need is the ability to decode your alef-bet (i.e. sound out your Hebrew letters), and you’ll be learning Talmud in the original Hebrew/Aramaic within your first hour. We guarantee it! Come with a friend to be your chevruta (study partner) or we’ll hook you up.

Get in on the rabbinic revolution, and join us!

More about the CRASH Talk:
In this interactive and inspiring lecture, Rabbi Benay Lappe lays out SVARA’s philosophy of the Talmud and the rabbinic revolution that gave rise to it—along with important vocabulary and concepts for anyone learning Jewish texts. She explains where the Talmud came from, why it was written, what its purpose is, and why the study of it has been so important for Judaism and those learning it.

More about the Bet Midrash:
There’s no better way to build on the CRASH Talk than to dive into Talmud study! Learning with SVARA is an experience of great depth and meaning, in a loving and supportive environment. Get a sense of what to expect here, and then roll up your sleeves and get ready!

**Note for those attending the One-Night Stand: If you’re able to join us for the Crash Talk on December 15th, we highly recommend it! In the CRASH Talk you’ll get to know our philosophy of the Talmud, and it will certainly help you dig in on your own!

*Not sure you’re ready to roll up your sleeves to learn Talmud with us in the bet midrash? Feel free to come just to the CRASH Talk & Reception.

*Note: We will be teaching the same text at the Sunday Bet Midrash and the Monday Night One-Night Stand.

If you can’t make it this time around, not to worry. SVARA will be back in LA in the spring and Queer Talmud Camp is coming to Southern CA this summer. In the meantime, check out this Eli Talk from our Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Benay Lappe.

SVARA’s programming in LA is generously supported by a Cutting Edge Grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles.
