Chicago One-Night Stand

Hot for SVARA but not ready to make a long-term commitment?
Been thinking about texting us late at night to see what we’re up to?

Join us for an evening of SVARA learning: hardcore, queer, and radically inclusive. We’ll learn a complete Talmud text, start to finish, to complete memorization and with deep and total ownership. This is a great chance to try SVARA out if you’ve been wondering what it’s like. And for our regulars, this is an opportunity to reconnect over the summer, or to bring a friend!

You might be asking, what are we learning?!

Ever heard that one about God lifting Mount Sinai over the heads of the Israelites? Or that one where our ancient sages reject the covenant made at Mt Sinai?! Come learn this text with us inside—no translations! According to the Talmud, our ancient sages weren’t too thrilled about the so-called covenant made at Sinai between God and the Jewish people. In fact, they sought to destabilize and reimagine the covenantal moment completely. What made them so distraught about this peak theological experience? We’ll decode the rabbinic story that explores these questions, models a subversive theology, and invites us to interrogate our assumptions about revelation.

July 26, 6:30–9:30 PM
at Sketchpad, 4700 N. Ravenswood, Suite B

All you need is the ability to decode your alef-bet (i.e. sound out your Hebrew letters), and you’ll be learning Talmud in the original Hebrew/Aramaic within your first hour. We can’t wait to learn with you!

RSVP to Amir and feel free to send him any questions you’ve got.
