Zissel Piazza

( they/them )
SVARA Fellow

Elya (Zissel זיסל) Piazza drags as a PhD candidate at UC Berkeley researching and writing queer readings of Jewish texts and culture. They are also a rabbinical student at RRC. Zissel teaches Yiddish and Talmud in both academic and community settings, and they love learning and employing radical pedagogical methods. They were a cohort 2 Teaching Kollel Fellow at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva, a Yiddish language Pedagogy fellow, and a Translation fellow at the Yiddish Book Center. Their translation of Di Agune by Maria Lerner, the earliest known Yiddish play by any woman playwright, is forthcoming in a volume of 3 Yiddish plays from Bloomsbury. In their “free time,” Zissel can be found hiking, writing, boxing, cuddling their doggies Ketzel and Porcini, or doing queer performance art in the closet.
